When we set roots in Maremma, our goal was to experiment with grape varieties and winemaking practices in a spirit of exploration and excitement typical of Querciabella. The first vintage of Turpino was the result of continuous improvements, increased experience with biodynamics and overall better knowledge of the local terroir. Still striving for the perfect blend, the first Turpino bottling was made in 2007 (but never released), mainly using Maremma-borne fruit with the addition of some unused grapes usually destined for our top cuvées – Camartina and Palafreno.
In 2010, the year of Querciabella vegan conversion to plant-based biodynamics, we finally agreed on 40% Syrah, 40% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot. Vintage after vintage, by reducing and finally eliminated from the blend the grapes from Chianti, we have let Turpino’s evocative coastal character fully emerge.
Turpino is Maremma’s rise to the Super Tuscan challenge, a voluptuous blend of Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot finely crafted by Querciabella.
Following in the footsteps of Camartina and Palafreno, the first Turpino bottling was made in 2007 but never released, using Maremma-borne fruit with the addition of grapes typically reserved for our top cuvées. Since the inaugural vintage of 2010 – and what a great year that was! – this wine has thrived in revealing its Mediterranean character. In 2017, the grapes from Chianti were finally excluded from the blend, giving rise to Querciabella’s original Super Coastal wine.
Elegance trumps muscles in Turpino 2019, one in six great vintages ever released, and the second entirely produced in Maremma. James Suckling praises it for its ripe flavours as well as its firm texture; for Antonio Galloni its vibrancy holds quite a bit of appeal.
Nicely light on its feet, it represents the coastal finesse at its most exciting. Fermentation in wooden vats and barrel ageing confers a gentleness to the spicy balsamic notes of the grape blend, a fine frame and a beguiling length of finish, making it a great food-friendly wine.
No animal products or byproducts are used in the production of this wine, making it suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
