HISTORICALLY DEFINED
It's the foundation of this project. Through the careful research of many historians and scholars, it is now known that the first vines in California were planted by the Juaneno (Acjachemen) Indians at the Mission San Juan Capistrano in the year 1779. It is also known that the Mission Indians of each of the 21 Missions were the first winemakers of California. The co-founder of Native Hands, Chris Lobo is a 9th generation Juaneno Mission Indian who traces his tribal lineage back to the year 1747 within the aboriginal territory. It’s with this connection that we honor the first winemakers of California, the Mission Indians and their NATIVE HANDS.
PINOT NOIR / THE COUNCIL PÚUPULUM
The Council (Púupulum) was composed of individuals with diverse expertise, including star readers, astrologists, shamans, and spiritual leaders, the Puupulum served as the primary advisers to the chief and wielded considerable influence over tribal affairs. Their wisdom and guidance were sought in matters ranging from governance and decision-making to spiritual teachings and community welfare. The Puupulum ensured the cohesion, stability, and well-being of the tribe, fostering a deep sense of community and reverence for tradition among all the Mission Tribes of California.
