Lucia Description

Yet another sublime chapter in the long and increasingly fabled history of this renowned vineyard, the 2021 Lucia by Pisoni Garys’ Vineyard Pinot Noir wastes no time as its deep ruby hue paints the edges of the glass. Loads of black cherry, crushed strawberry, and sandalwood take center stage while secondary aromas of fresh cedar, clove, and sage create a stunning olfactory experience. Capitalizing on the mild summer temperatures created by ever-present fog and coastal wind, the vines rooted deeply in the sandy loam soils ripened these berries slowly and methodically. The slow ripening process produced a wine of exception depth and concentration, giving way to delicate notes of baking spice and toasted vanilla. Over time in the glass, the wine’s structured infancy evolves to soft and elegant approachability as tannin begins to soften. The delicious Pinot Noir has all the components to age and evolve beautifully over the next decade and beyond.

The Pisoni Family is committed to raising and hand-crafting exceptional wines. The limited-production Lucia wines are created using classic, gentle and thoughtful winemaking techniques. Hand-picked and sorted grapes are fermented with native yeast and aged in carefully selected French oak barrels. Our state-of-the-art winemaking facility uses gravity flow as part of a custom design conceived to merge the estate vineyards and winery. This affords us complete control of the farming and winemaking process, ensuring consistently superior quality.

Garys’ Vineyard has been named “one of the most famous vineyards in California” by Lettie Teague in the Wall Street Journal. It is a joint venture between Gary Pisoni and Gary Franscioni, two native growers of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Garys’ Vineyard is planted exclusively to Pinot Noir, and the grapes have enjoyed long, slow growing seasons in this 50-acre parcel since 1997. The vineyard’s position on a sloping hillside in the center of the 16-mile long appellation offers a true representation of the Santa Lucia Highlands: alluvial soils with heavy fog and strong, cold winds in the summer.

Wine Enthusiast: 96 Points

This is a bombastic but balanced and beautiful Pinot Noir, beginning with aromas of black-cherry kirsch, cola and licorice. An epic richness envelops the palate, yet it's encased in a firm skeleton of tannins. Flavors of black cherry and cedar lead into a pine-tar-laced finish.

Jeb Dunnuck: 94 Points

The 2019 Pinot Noir Garys' Vineyard gives up slightly more savory, earthy nuances in its ripe red and black fruits as well as scorched earth, toasted Asian spices, and orange zest aroma and flavors. Rich, medium to full-bodied, and concentrated, it has ripe, notable tannins, good freshness and purity, and a great finish. It will keep for over a decade.
