Peter Lauer is one of the most celebrated producers in Germany, known for producing ethereal dry and dry-tasting Rieslings from the Saar, though he has only been making wine since 2005. Most of his wines are from the Kupp hillside, which, under the German Wine Law of 1971, combined many once individual vineyards under one umbrella, Kupp, thus erasing these traditional sites. Peter has made it a crusade to keep these vineyard names alive, and since 2014, he has been able to label his wines with the traditional names. All vineyard work is done by hand since the vineyards are so steep, and all farming is organic (though he is not certified). All grapes are fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and are aged in a mix of stainless steel, fiberglass and traditional Fuder for between 1-6 months on the lees. All wines are vegan.
Peter Lauer's Barrel X is 100% Riesling from a combination of estate and purchased fruit from neighbors. This is Peter's idea of what off-dry Saar Riesling should be; his entry level wine, the equivalent of a Bourgogne Blanc; and a ridiculous value to boot. Barrel X delivers the racy acidity, mineral drive, fruit concentration and lightweight that is only found in the Saar.
