Winemaker Matt Dees from Jonata crafts this beauty. The fruit that goes into this wine comes from younger vines from the Jonata project so the appellation is simply "California", although most of it comes from the Santa Barbara area. All of the farming is done organically with NO CHEMICAL PESTICIDES USED and this wine is made up of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. It was aged for 22 months in all French Oak with 55% of the barrels new. Loaded with blackberry compote, black raspberry, and toasted vanilla, this wine brings in herbs, graphite, and higher-toned hints of raspberry liquor and tobacco that accent the core of plush and pure dark berry fruit perfectly.
This blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot shows a slightly reductive, meaty funk on the nose, offering charred beef, black pepper and asphalt aromas. That carries into the savory palate, where charred wood and tar flavors recall roasted short ribs in a blackberry compote.
The 2018 Red Wine checks in as 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 15% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot. It’s a medium to full-bodied, ripe, rounded, nicely concentrated blend with lots of ripe currant and blackberry fruits as well as an herbal kick in its tobacco, earth, and ripe herb aromas and flavors. It’s ideal for drinking over the coming 5-7 years or more.
The 2018 Red is a joyous, vibrant red. Succulent dark cherry, leather, chocolate, tobacco, spice and cedar complement a core of super-ripe dark berry fruit. Bold and exuberant to the core, the Red has so much to offer. Pretty earthy and savory notes lend tons of aromatic nuance. Best of all, the 2018 is an insane value.
