It's in the name, but Story of Soil is all about the terroir or 'sense of place' for their wines. For every wine, winemaker and owner, Jessica Gasca, utilizes a single varietal and a single vineyard to produce wines that express its site. Donnachadh Vineyard is located 9 miles from the Pacific Ocean. Morning fog cools and protects the grapes from the sun while consistent afternoon ocean breezes keep heat from building up over the course of the day. Only 125 cases of the 2022 Story of Soil Pet Nat of Gruner Veltliner were made.
This wine is a Petillant Natural (pet nat): a style of sparkling wine where the initial fermentation finishes inside the bottle. This naturally creates a soft effervescence; I've had this wine after its been open for 3 days and it was still bubbly! At just 11% abv, there are notes of crisp green apple, tangy lemon zest, and an ironlike edge to give it a mineral-driven backbone. Overall, this is an extremely well-balanced sparkling wine that sits very nicely on the palate. Perfect for a hot day!
