The 2021 Schloss Lieser Juffer Riesling Kabinett, as Juffer is deemed by the VDP as a 'Grosse Lage' or Grand Cru Site! The vineyard is comprised of blue Devonian slate with iron inclusions, and Lieser's holdings are from the best parcels in the middle section or 'filet piece' of the vineyard. The Schloss Lieser winery is family-run, organic, and has only 8,000 cases of annual production. The Vinum Weinguide Deutschland (a reputable German wine guide) rates only two estates in the Greater Mosel five stars out of five: Schloss Lieser and Egon Muller.
The wine has a very intense, concentrated nose with notes of petrol, flint, lychee, and green apple. On the palate, there's resounding slate and crushed stone minerality. This is an off-dry wine meaning that there is a touch of sweetness here which wonderfully balances the high acidity. The low alcohol (7.5% abv) won't intensify the spiciness - in fact, the residual sugar dampens the heat.
The 2021 Juffer Kabinett is clear, deep and finely reductive on the flinty, intense and well-concentrated nose. Savory and lush on the palate, with delicate salinity and precise mineral acidity that uplifts the sweetness (40 grams per liter or a bit more) of this Juffer Kabinett, this is a consistent, very elegant and promising Kabinett that will be fascinating in about five or six years but can be aged for at least four decades. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022.
