Marc Piro's daytime job is head winemaker for Au Bon Climat (since 2012), but his true passion project and childhood dream realized is Piro Wine Company. Marc is clear about the focus of his boutique label, saying, "I strive to make old-world-style wines from the new world: extremely delicious wines of balance, elegance, and structure." He has an emphasis on Pinot Noir, and we've featured some in the past. However, Marc also makes Chardonnay and the new 2022 'Points West' Chardonnay is so good that we had to get the word out!
The 2022 Piro Points West Chardonnay is full of layers and nuance! It's not shy on the nose with a pretty white floral perfume that leads into lusher aromas of orange peel and candied lemons. This is reminiscent of Au Bon Climat's Chardonnays (obviously), but the palate is framed by a firmer texture and a salty and savory finish that comes across like Parmesan rind. Put simply, this is a rich, medium-bodied Chardonnay with vibrant acidity that hits all the right notes!
The 2022 Chardonnay, from Rancho Real, is super-expressive. Lemon confit, white flowers and tangerine peel are some of the many nuances that take shape. Despite the warm, dry conditions of the year, the 2022 retains terrific freshness.
