This is Piedrasassi's entry-level wine, yet it consistently overdelivers in quality for the price!
To make Piedrasassi wines, winemaker Sashi Moorman follows in the footsteps of the great Syrah producers in the Northern Rhone, France. He utilizes whole grape clusters and large used oak barrels to let the expression of the vineyard sites shine. Piedrasassi is widely heralded as a benchmark producer for cool climate Syrah in California! Sourcing Syrah from cooler climates allows for higher levels of acidity and more pronounced spicy and savory characteristics. These wines tend to be more refined than their warmer-climate counterparts.
The 2021 'P.S.' Syrah is a meaty wine with notes of black pepper, cured meats, and black olives. These savory and spicy characteristics are wonderfully balanced by notes of blueberries and blackberry preserves all the while staying lifted and vibrant on the palate.
The 2021 Syrah Santa Barbara County is scented of black raspberries, candied blackberries, cracked pepper, smoked meats and green olive. The medium-bodied palate is bright and chalky with restrained yet nuanced fruit and a long, latent finish. I would be inclined to drink it on the earlier side after a couple hours in a decanter, and its freshness will allow it to pair widely at the table.
The 2021 Syrah (Santa Barbara County) is fabulous. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, mocha, black pepper, herbs, incense and tobacco all build in this racy, almost shockingly opulent young Syrah. This dense, juicy Syrah is lights out. The 30% stems are pretty much buried by the fruit.
