One of the most unique and powerfully intense red wines from Spain comes from the hilltop slate-laden vineyards of Priorat located in the northeastern region of Catalonia. High elevation on black slate soils provides the perfect conditions for growing lush and intense Grenache and the gorgeous 2021 Mas Doix 'Les Crestes' Priorat is a stunning example of just how special this region can be! This wine is made up of 80% twenty-plus-year-old Garnacha combined with small amounts of Syrah and Carignan. This wine is absolutely bursting with vivid raspberry and spiced cherry fruits, hints of exotic brown spice, lavender perfume, and cracked black pepper that made us all think of the great wines of Chateauneuf du Pape in southern France.
The young and juicy red 2021 Les Crestes made me think of a wine from the Rhône, with black berry fruit, spice, earth, smoked bacon and violet aromas. The palate is velvety, medium to full-bodied and has fine, round tannins. Very drinkable and pleasant.
