We're on a perpetual hunt to find reasonably priced, red and white Burgundy that's ready to drink now. These wines are widely considered to be the best Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays in the world and as a result, prices have skyrocketed in recent years. Although very hard, finding good value in Burgundy is still possible if you know where to look! Last week I was delighted to discover a sub $50 bottle of Burgundy that's quite literally quenched my thirst for the time being. It's no surprise that the producer is none other than Maison Louis Latour: an 11th-generation, family-owned company and one of the most famous producers in Burgundy.
The 2019 Louis Latour Santenay is a gorgeous Pinot Noir sourced from 30-year-old vines that rest on top of limestone. This is about the furthest south you can go within the Cote de Beaune, Burgundy, and still has soil that's similar to other premier vineyard sites further north. Furthermore, every major wine publication agrees that 2019 is a great year in Burgundy. In fact, the Wine Advocate issued a 96-point overall rating for the 2019 vintage in the Cote de Beaune saying that the wines across the board are 'extraordinary, early maturing and accessible.'
When you pop the cork on the 2019 Latour Santenay, earthy aromas of fresh hay and tilled soil waft out of the glass - something that I've come to really enjoy in Old World wines. While very prominent at first, these rustic aromas quickly blow off and dissipate into the background letting perfumed ripe strawberries come front and center stage. Gorgeous red fruits of cherries and strawberries carry through on the palate with a smooth and seamless texture. This is so nice to drink now and we've already had several bottles for ourselves!
Santenay is the most southerly village in the Côte de Beaune and produces both red and white wines. The red wines from Santenay are reputed to be tannic and well-structured. Santenay is said to have the soul of Volnay and the body of Pommard.
Our Santenay Rouge 2019 presents a ruby hue. Its nose is delicate mixing notes of small red fruits, licorice and nutmeg. Its supple mouth reveals a liquorice finish.
