Presqui’ile Vineyard is planted on a extremely sandy ridge at the southwestern edge of the Santa Maria AVA. The combination of the moderate climate and relatively poor soils creates a Syrah that is lively, spicy and complex. The wine was fermented with 25% whole clusters to add to the texture and mouth feel of the wine. Dark purple color, reminiscent of violets with aromas of crushed black pepper. Aged for 14 months in 2 and 3 year-old barrels, 13.5% alcohol.
An excellent model of how cool-climate Syrah can be done on the California coast, this bottling energizes the nose with green, white and black peppercorn, bay leaf and smashed elderberry aromas on the explosive nose. Those tremendous spices fire up what black raspberry fruit of the palate, leaving the tongue tantalized and ready for more. — Matt Kettmann
