The Fattoria di Basciano 'I Pini' Toscana Rosso is made by the Masi Family who have been operating this fabulous estate for three generations. The vineyard sits at about 1000 feet of elevation on a hilltop. The high elevation and influence of the river make for warm, very dry days in the summer with much cooler temperatures at night. This diurnal change helps build a very dark color and deeply intense yet fresh berry fruit. Chianti is known for Sangiovese but this estate does amazing with Bordeaux grapes. The soil is rocky soil known as 'Galestro' that makes for perfect drainage and imparts a gorgeous vein of minerality to the wine. This wine is equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah and it was aged for 18 months in 50% new and 50% one-year-old French oak barrels. This wine is a top-level red with a dark, nearly opaque color. Black cherries and macerated blackberries layered with cedar, hints of cracked pepper, leather, and cigar box dance with hints of floral perfume. This is a silky vanilla-tinged gem that is powerfully rich yet satin smooth and the finish is long and complex.
Dark berry fruit, espresso beans, tobacco and tomato leaves on the nose. Chewy and compact with a full body and firm yet polished tannins. Excellent freshness and focus.
