The 2020 Syrah MJM is mostly Syrah but includes 3% Graciano that was raised for 27 months in French oak, 60% new. Its deep plum/purple hue is followed by a stunning Syrah loaded with ripe black and blue fruits interwoven with spice, ground pepper, iron-laced herbs, and subtle gamey nuances. This full-bodied, flawlessly balanced, salty, lengthy Syrah clearly has some up-front appeal today yet will benefit from a year or two of bottle age and cruise for 15 years in cold cellars.
Brooding, expressive and impressively focused, this blend of 97% Syrah and 3% Grenache comes from Stolpman, Kimsey, and Larner vineyards, all selected for their soils series: clay loam and limestone for Stolpman; clay for Kimsey; and sand for Larner. Blood orange and black cherry fruit are intertwined with smoky clove and Mexican chocolate. Medium to full-bodied with exacting pliant and long tannins with velvety quality. Those tannins frame juicy, tangy orchard and citrus fruit notes on the palate, and resolve with saline-scented minerals and blue floral accents. The ethos for Dragonette's MJM Syrah is 'The sum is greater than its parts'. The first vintage produced was in 2007.
The 2020 MJM (Syrah) is superb. Potent and rather heady, the 2020 is quite the extrovert. Varietal notes are dialed up to the maximum. It's a style that works so well here. The tannins are quite polished, especially for such a big wine. Vineyard sites are: Stolpman, Kimsey and Larner.
The 2020 Syrah MJM comes from three vineyards in Santa Barbara County including Stolpman (65%), Kimsey (25%) and Larner (10%). It contains 3% Grenache and was matured in 60% new French oak for 27 months. It unfurls slowly to reveal aromas of blueberries, blackcurrant, peppermint patty, aniseed, cracked pepper and garrigue. The full-bodied palate is powerful without being weighty, its concentrated flavors framed by rounded tannins and seamless freshness. It's still youthfully coiled and will benefit from 3-5 years in bottle.
