Deep violet color. Displays an array of spice-tinged black and blue fruit aromas, along with building floral and smoked meat nuances. Gently chewy and focused on the palate, offering sweet blueberry and kirsch flavors that are complemented by suggestions of olive, smoky minerals and cracked pepper. Fine-grained tannins frame a long, energetic finish that echoes the floral and spice notes emphatically.
Stéphane Rousset, a small domaine that hews to organic farming practices and hands-off but fastidious cellar work, has been producing some of the best values in the Northern Rhône for some time. Rousset’s wines are a bit of an insider’s secret in France, especially among the restaurant and retail trade and his winemaking colleagues. The wines’ early-drinking appeal is undoubtedly greatly responsible for their consistent popularity.
