In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet core with subtle brick hues at the rim. The nose is lifted and complex, offering an interplay of ripe red cherries, macerated raspberries, and violets, supported by hints of graphite, cedar, and warm spice. On the palate, it is both powerful and refined—typical of Monforte—with concentrated red berry fruit, dried rose petals, and a savory undercurrent of earth and tobacco. Fine-grained, ripe tannins provide a firm backbone, while lively acidity keeps the wine fresh and vibrant. The finish is long and persistent, echoing with cherry, floral, and mineral notes. Approachable now with decanting, this wine will reward cellaring for a decade or more.
Lifted with blood orange citrus, the 2019 Barolo Del Comune Di Monforte D'Alba is spiced with clove, menthol, and cherry. It is medium to full bodied, with fine tannins, a fresh spine of acidity, and raspberry, dusty earth, and fresh peach. I love the balance of its structure and its refined texture. This is an outstanding effort to drink 2024-2044.
