The 2018 Chateau d'Arsac 'Le Kid d'Arsac' Margaux is the second wine from this historic chateau and we all loved the modern label that is a playful riff on a child's drawing of the chateau. Owner Philippe Raoux has been called the "Free-spirited kid of Margaux" hence the name. This wine is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot that was grown on the signature Margaux soils which are a sandy-gravelly clay mixture that is well drained yet holds enough moisture to make Cabernet thrive. The estate has been completely revamped and updated over the past 20 years and is now farmed sustainably and certified under a new French eco-friendly department called the Environmental Management System Association. This certification requires almost completely organic farming with only small amounts of additives used only in minuscule amounts when natural conditions exist that would be catastrophic. Chemical pesticides are not used. This winery was elevated to the prestigious Margaux Appellation after years of neglect in the first part of the 20th century had left the estate in ruins. This is quite a success story and the quality of this wine is fabulous! This wine was aged in 50% new French oak and 50% stainless steel. The wine is a gorgeous deep purple-red color in the glass and jumps out with a strikingly pure array of dark berry and cherry notes layered with cedar and herb accents that play off the plush core of fruit. This gem sports an absolutely superb texture that punches way above its price and that totally got us hooked from the first sip.
