The 2021 Hinter der Mauer, 80% Gruner and 20% Riesling, is a white of uncommon depth, especially at its price point. Scents of pear, jasmine, mint and lemon confit lend nuance to a classy, polished wine that over delivers big time. A long, clean finish rounds things out in style. I was blown away by the wines I tasted with Grahama Tatomer this year. Tatomer has thoughtfully expanded his range over the last few years. At the same time, he has become more selective about what goes into the vineyard designate whites, choosing to use the rest for his entry-level Hinter der Mauer, which is easily one of the very finest values in all of Santa Barbara.
This affordably priced blend of 80% Grüner Veltliner and 20% Riesling makes a tasty conversation starter on any table. Aromas of citrus peel, dried green apple and fresh red apple show on the nose.
